Berlin Street Culture
I stand by my statement that the best events are the spontaneous ones. On one moody grey Thursday in Nottingham a few friends and I decided the book a last minute flight to Berlin, Germany. We booked with Last minute and got a great deal with return flights coming just over £30, which was a perfect price for a bunch of broke students!
So we flew out on the Friday with Easy-Jet, the first time that id actually used the budget airline. It was surprisingly quite good, compared to all the bad reviews ive constantly heard about it. Perhaps it was not the usually travel time, since the plane was half empty, we even managed to get a few rows of seats free to lie down and sleep for the couple of hours flight.
We landed in Berlin and the first thing that struck me was the great subway system. Although the London underground is supposed to be the simplest system, the Berlin Metro runs it close. We took a train directly from the airport to Alexanderplatz, Berlins’ version of Kings Cross.
The thing that struck me the most, was the street art Berlin is famous for. The streets are paved with great graffiti art and hidden gems all across south Berlin which serve as a constant reminder of the cities dark past. Across streets you can still see broken walls, and even bullet holes. The fantastic culture is something to be savoured and totally different from any other city in the world. Aspects such as the Berlin wall are a fixture which is a constant stone in the hearts of many Germans which remind them of their past.
Other then the amazing street culture, Berlin has one of the best nightlife in Europe. Germans are known for their hard rocking techno music and this is something which is clearly evident amongst Berlins greatest clubs. This free easy lifestyle is also clear in normal society, with social drinking encouraged. We ended up one night in a Germany curry house, which encouraged us to drink a couple bottles of wine during our meal. The price was not exactly that expensive either.
Berlin is one of the places everyone has to visit once in their lifetime, it is probably one of the only places in the world which has modernised, yet still has an incredibly rich history which anyone can gain from, from the Jewish museum, to the Berlin wall; and not forgetting the amazing street culture.
