Visit Lyon, it’s Better than Paris!

Lyon is to France, what Barcelona is to Spain. It’s tucked away in the south west region of France sharing a temperate climate that sees the warmth of southerly regions and crisp cold air with its’ neighbouring Switzerland, and did I mention it’s better than Paris?

Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière
The white castle-like structure on the hillside is the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, an old cathedral that overlooks the entire breadth of the city and two arterial rivers that run from north to south. A view and vantage point almost equal to the Christ the Redeemer statue in the Brazilian capital Rio as it allows you to see everything.

Festival of Lights

Every year Lyon is home to the spectacular Festival of Lights in Lyon’s Place des Terreaux main square also where the Bartholdi Fountain resides as the centre piece. This festival lasts 4 days and attracts visitors all over the world who come to see the grand light projections that cover the squares facades in creative and cinematic animations. 

Old and Modern Architecture

Like most European cities Lyon shares a blend of old architecture and that of a modern vibrant metropolitan city. The old town quarter is home to the St Jean Cathedral whilst the other side of the city houses the Lyon Opera House with its curved glass rooftop sitting above white marble columns.

Vienne

Drive an hour south of Lyon and you will arrive at the cultural town of Vienne (Not to be confused with Vienna in neighbouring Switzerland) where you could easily be mistaken for thinking that you were in Italy. The town has a series of prominent architectural ruins left over from prior Roman occupation. Expect to see flats overlooking stone streets that house many coffee shops and restaurants and small music venues.

Friendly Locals

As with many capitals that suffer from capital city syndrome Lyon’s locals and inhabitants are a friendly crowd of sociable people.

Good Transport

Lyon has a very good transport infrastructure which includes both an automated Metro system on the city outskirts brining people into the city and a manned metro system within the inner limits. There are also modern electrified trolley busses, and a tram leading to  Saint Exupéry airport and train station.
