Chiang Mai
As far as Thailand holidays go, you can’t get away without experiencing the metropolis of Chiang Mai. Northwest of Bangkok, Chiang Mai exists as one of the most culturally significant cities in Thailand. The city exhibits a mix of exotic markets, tranquil temples and modern architecture. Get a taste of traditional cuisine with a cooking class, followed by an authentic Thai massage. Although Chiang Mai is a tapestry of beautiful sacred temples, it is also a shopper’s hub. Be sure to visit Chiang Mai Night Bazaar at night and browse handicrafts and sparkling trinkets, but make sure you bargain hard! Chiang Mai is also in close proximity to the natural terrain, hills and lush greenery.
Hilltribe trek
Numerous hilltribes occupy the northern region of Thailand, among a rich tapestry of culture and heritage. These tribes have strong traditions and religious beliefs, living off the land by hunting and cultivating farms. You can stay in authentic bamboo huts in the villages, and mingle with the hospitable tribes people. Spend a couple of nights there to really immerse yourself in local folklore and traditions. Set off on an expedition to the rice paddies, along the cool shady tracks and see what else the land has to offer.
Delicious Thai cuisine
You haven’t quite tried Thai food until you’ve been to Thailand itself. The combination of spicy, sweet and savoury is what makes authentic Thai so distinct. You can sample the internationally popular Massaman curry, a dish marinated in coconut milk, cinnamon and classic tamarind sauce. Savour a green curry, traditional Pad Thai, or a mouth-watering Tom Kha Gai soup and you’ll probably never want to go western again.
