London’s Carnaby Street

Londons’ Carnaby Street is one of the most popular tourist and shopping destinations in London. What makes this street special is that it is not the size of Oxford Street, Harrods, or Selfridges but a small street hidden and tucked away in central London.

The street itself came about in the early 18th century, and was originally a popular trading market as well as including jazz clubs and many social joints. This led the street to be given the reputation of having a very multi-cultural and vibrant area. There is still signs today of its historic ambience, with the street extremely popular for independent outlets which often include fashion outlets, and designers – as it continues its appeal of individuality and trendy looks. In more recent times, larger brands such as Boots have set up shop along the street, creating a more modern day shopping destination for both global brands as well as individual hand made products.

(Popularised in a very hipster era)

Just around the corner from Carnaby street you can find dozens of restaurants, pubs and bars which cater for emerging local as well as global talent. You could even say that Carnaby street is right behind Camden in being Londons creative and musical hub. For shoppers who spend a whole day out here, you can easy go shopping in the daytime and find some local entertainment in the evening and the area caters for all.

(Carnaby Street become extremely busy in its more popular years)

One criticism of the area is that it is becoming increasingly difficult for independent retailers to set up shop for longer than a year. Along the street is a 3 storey department store. Kingly Court is world famous for hosting these unique boutiques, but modern day rent has started to drive retailers out of the area. In fact, a quick visit to Kingly court and you can see how empty it can be, with many stores actually closed down and boarded up.

Regardless, Carnaby Street is a must visit for all shoppers, travel to the street is easy enough, with a close 5 minute walking distance to Oxford Circus tube station.
