Lake Garda: A Small Slice of Heaven
During the last few years I have had the pleasure of traveling to and experiencing some of the most beautiful places on earth, so I wasn’t expecting to be impressed by what Lake Garda had to offer.
After taking in the fresh Italian air as I made my way to my hotel, the beautiful Villa Sostaga, I realized that I wasn’t in another so called luxury resort.
Even though it is classed as a resort, there is something very natural about Lake Garda. The air always seems to be fresh and free of the usual pollution which follows most holiday destinations.
The waters are clear and again free of the usual pollutants which are often found in areas where large groups of holiday goers descend on.
During my stay I rarely saw a cloud in the sky, but it is well known that the lake is prone to heavy rains near the end of the summer, so keep that in mind if you plan to go near that time.
As I always do before travelling anywhere, I like to note down places of interest, which not only attract the tourists like myself, but also show off the areas culture and history.
Sirmione
One such place was the ancient, fortified, town of Sirmione. The town is packed with bars and restaurants, and bustles with life at any hour of the day, which isn’t a bad thing, just don’t expect to have a quiet time if that is what you’re after.
Obviously I did sample some of the local cuisine and I have to say, I’m normally quite picky about what I eat, but I got adventurous and tried a little something from each menu I encountered. The service was always polite and friendly and the food itself was simply amazing.
Seriously, even if you were to visit Lake Garda just for the food, you will feel like you are in heaven. However, despite the hospitality and fine dining, my main goal since I was in the town was to see the equally ancient Scaliger castle. I had been told about its picturesque beauty and I was not disappointed.
Sulfur springs
I could have easily spent most of the day just taking in the ruined building, but unfortunately my time was limited and I had to move on to the next destination on my list; The sulfur springs, which are situated at the tip of the peninsula.
It has been said that the springs have healing qualities which leave its visitors feeling healthier and happier than ever before. In all honesty I can’t say if I felt any healthier by the time I had to leave for my hotel, but I certainly felt refreshed and much happier. The springs, just like the town of Sirmione, are a big tourist attraction, so it can be quite difficult to find a spot where you can simply just sit and relax.
However, I found that by the time I got there later in the afternoon, the main rush of tourists had been and went leaving only those few like myself who were truly seeking a relaxing experience.
I had only a short time in the beautiful Lake Garda, which left me wishing I could stay for longer to take in even more of the landscape and its people, but I was content with what I had been able to experience so far and I would highly recommend if you are looking for a luxury holiday then it is small slice of heaven on earth.
