Shopping for the Best Sales in New York City

New York City is known around the world as one of the best shopping destinations in the entire world. Although the stores are packed during the month of December as travellers stock up on Christmas presents and take in the beautiful holiday decorations in places like Macy’s and Lord & Taylor, smart shoppers know that January can actually be an even better time to be in the city.

Since stores are getting ready to replace winter clothing and accessories with spring items, they need to clear the shelves in a hurry. In addition, stores need to have sales in order to encourage shoppers to brave the cold winter temperatures that are so common in the city in January. If you are planning a shopping trip to New York City this January, use this helpful guide to find all the best sales on things from clothing to toys and even electronics.

Triple Pier Antiques Show: If you love antiques, the Triple Pier Antiques Show is an important place to add to your shopping itinerary for New York City. This collection of antiques, clothing and vintage jewellery is located in Pier 94, and it is best known for hosting a giant auction in March of every year. During the months of March through December, the Triple Pier Antiques Show does business as usual. In January, however, vendors need to clear the merchandise in order to have space to bring in all of the new items for the important March sale. The beauty of this January sale is that prices are not set in stone, so shoppers can feel free to negotiate until they are happy with the cost.

Paul Stuart: Men living in New York City who want to dress to impress know that one of the best places to find high quality suits and casual wear is at Paul Stuart. With a location right on Madison Avenue, many visitors are discouraged because regular prices tend to be on the expensive side. All that changes, however, during Paul Stuart’s annual January sale. Expect discounts of up to 80 percent on all the items from last season as well as buy one get one free deals on everything from ties to socks.

Seek Out Sample Sales: Sample sales are events where stores sell much of their merchandise at ridiculously low prices. In some cases, the items are out of style or only available in one or two sizes. New York fashion lovers live for these sample sales, many of which take place right after the holidays during the month of January. Since designer boutiques don’t like to advertise big discounts, they hold semiprivate sample sales at alternative locations. The only trouble is learning about these sales, which aren’t always widely publicized. The best bet for visitors is to find a copy of Time Out New York, which typically lists the week’s sample sales under a section in the back called Shop Talk.

Sigerson Morrison: Ask any local fashion lovers where the best place is to buy shoes, and they may well direct you to the Sigerson Morrison shop on Prince Street. The shoes on offer range from classic ballet flats in a range of candy-coloured hues to office-appropriate pumps. For most of the year, these incredible shoes can go for close to $1,000 a pair, meaning that most visitors never even dream of making a purchase. In January, however, Sigerson Morrison hosts their annual Crazy Sale where every pair in the store is $250 or less.
