Weirdest Cocktails from Around the Globe

Do you ever have the dreaded drink dilemma? You know the predicament… should you stick to beer?

Hmm, but a red wine sounds nice doesn’t it? Or perhaps you should give the old favourite, JD and Coke, a whirl. Well thankfully, there is one kind of drink which solves all these problems: the classic cocktail. With endless combinations – from the typical to the typically insane – they provide fun and better yet, endless variation. With this in mind, we thought we’d regale you with some of the craziest cocktails available for consumption around the globe.

Cricket Cocktail

If you’re visiting the White & Church bar in New York City, it’s best to check before ordering the Cricket Cocktail. If you’re expecting a sport-themed beverage, you’ll end up highly disappointed and a little shocked to say the least. Made up of edible crickets, this particular drink sounds like a trial from some kind of jungle-set reality TV show… mixed with pineapple juice and rum and stirred with bamboo sticks, it’s a rather inventive take on the Pina Colada.

Russian Breakfast

No, not a blini-flavoured cocktail, but a rather decadent concoction of dry chocolate vodka, blended dark chocolate, and dark beer caviar. Found at Lounge Bohemia in London – this sounds like the type of drink that should only be drunk by men in suits, preferably smoking a pipe. Or alternatively, anyone who can afford it!

Smoker’s Cough

Possibly the oddest name for a cocktail ever, the smoker’s cough is also one of the most divisive. A very basic mixture, it is made up of one shot of Jagermeister and one teaspoon of mayonnaise. Yep, you heard right… mayonnaise! For anyone who isn’t a lover of dairy mixed with alcohol, it’s possibly a good idea to steer clear of this one.

Scorpion Vodka

What is it with creepy crawlies and cocktails? It’s a trend that seems to be popular, shown by this type of vodka found with a real scorpion in the bottom. Said to ‘enhance’ the flavour of this five-time distilled spirit, it’s also apparently completely safe to eat. Well at least you won’t have to buy any peanuts; scorpion vodka has got your snacking needs covered.

Snake wine

Made by infusing rice wine with snakes, this traditional Vietnamese beverage isn’t as off the wall as it sounds. In fact, Asian countries have always thought snake tissue to have great medicinal properties, believing it to be a cure for everything from rheumatism to impotence. If you’re wondering… the alcohol kills the poison in the snake’s venom, meaning if you happen to try this particular bad boy, all you’ll be left with is an aftertaste (and a whopping great hangover).

Whether you fancy trying any of these off-the-wall cocktails the next time you’re on holiday, or if you’d prefer to take the nice and simple approach, we’d advise you to take care and drink responsibly. Not that we’re your mother or anything…
