Top Five : Beach Activities

With most people desperate to escape the gloom of winter, coastal destinations are more popular than ever before. It’s understandable, as an all-round crowd pleaser: the beach acts a great escape for families, mates and couples alike.

However, if you’re the type who gets itchy feet after five minutes on a sun lounger, then why not start thinking of more adventurous ways to occupy yourself on holiday?

Regardless of whether you’re going with an equally thrill-seeking group of mates or a few reluctant family members – there are whole host of activities to make the beach a more exciting place. Here are our top five fads for you to try!

Surfing

The original beach bum activity, surfing has had a bit of a renaissance in recent years. An adrenaline fuelled rollercoaster, there’s no better way to embrace Mother Nature, and with it being possible to ride waves everywhere from California to Cornwall: you can easily choose your destination based on your price range. If your fitness is a little lacking – or you’re just a bit of a scaredy cat – boogie boarding (riding on your tummy) is also a fantastic alternative.

Yoga or Tai Chi

If you’re looking for a beach side activity but want to steer clear of any outrageous exercise, then why not try a more calming sport? There seems to be a new rise in fitness classes taking place on the sand, so check out the local gyms and activity centres for information. Whether it’s yoga for beginners or tai chi (a combination of deep breathing and slow, gentle movement) – you’ll be able to take your relation to another level.

Fly a Kite

Not just an activity for little kids; kite flying can actually be a fantastic activity for all ages, as well as a great way of making the most of any secluded spots on the shore. Big kite flying competitions are pretty popular in the States, so if you’re heading across the pond, be sure to check them out. Alternatively, the windy coasts of the UK are also a perfect playground – it’s possible to buy or make your own paper version without much trouble!

Wind Surfing

You’ve probably seen the experts doing it, but don’t let the difficulty of this sport put you off – half the fun of wind surfing is in its extreme nature. You will fall head first into the sea, there’s no doubt about it, but the thrill and sense of achievement you’ll get when you manage to stay upright for thirty seconds will override it all.

Fishing and Crabbing

Despite being a gentle activity, fishing and crabbing can provide a whole host of excitement. Whether you’re heading somewhere more exotic or not, you’ll be surprised at what type of creatures you’ll find hiding in the nooks and crannies of cliff faces everywhere. Just remember to be kind and put them back where you found them!
