The Greatest Song Locations
Often used as a way of celebrating different cultures from all over the world, music has the power to transport us. Whether it’s stated in the actual lyrics, or simply in the feel good beat – there are those songs that are completely associated with a place. Here’s a list of some of the best and most ‘international’ songs to inspire your next must-visit wish list!
Empire State of Mind
It’ll always be associated with Frank Sinatra’s legendary hit, but with Alicia Keys and the Jigga man himself giving NYC an altogether more modern day century anthem, nobody can say the big Apple is outdated. Used for the soundtrack to Sex and the City 2, this big anthem couldn’t be any more ‘New York’ if it tried.
Club Tropicana
Although not specifying any place in particular, Wham’s 1983 hit Club Tropicana simply oozes summer. Whether it’s Spain, Greece or Italy, the tongue in cheek lyrics (and video) evoke endless ‘soft white sands’ and club 18-30 fun and sun.
California Dreamin’
There’s a reason why people so many people have sung about California. Although it does have undertones relating to religion and other themes, California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and Papas is basically about dreaming of a better place. And it’s difficult not to dream of the warm, sunny skies of Cali’ whilst listening to this classic.
Walk Like an Egyptian
Although somewhat gimmicky, this 1986 hit by The Bangles cannot fail to evoke imagery of ancient Egypt. The combination of lyrics and video dance moves are a little stereotypical to say the least, but fun nonetheless. (“All the old paintings on the tomb/ They do the sand dance don’t you know?”)
Rio
Rio might be the name of a girl in the song, but Duran Duran’s eighties hit also mentions the ‘Rio Grande’ – the river running down from the US to Mexico. Helped by its attractive video – featuring boats and beautiful women – it’s a song which strongly brings to mind glamour and endless summer.
London Calling
Despite this 1970’s hit evoking feelings of struggle and cultural oppression, the Clash’s London Calling has actually come to be associated with a rather more simple view of London town. With its killer hook and roaring chorus, London Calling – sung by one of the greatest punk rock bands of all time – is undoubtedly a great calling card for the city itself.
