A Trip Down Memory Lane

If the onslaught of holiday adverts and ‘dream’ destinations are leaving you a little less than inspired at the moment – or even if you’re lucky enough to have already visited most of the places on your to-do list - why not take a moment and think of the destinations you desperately loved to go as a child?

With rather simple expectations, most ways to keep kids happy tend to involve a load of larger than life characters, a simple swimming pool – not to mention buckets of ice cream. Has much changed for you? Let’s take a trip down memory lane and remind ourselves of the best things about those childhood holidays of old.

A Caravan Holiday

Remember the good old days when all the space you needed was a crapped corner in which to play with your toys? It’s a good job topping and tailing with your brothers and sisters is actually quite fun when you’re five years old, as most families tend to forgo the idea of ‘personal space’ when it comes to caravans. Whether you’ve experienced the good old fashioned caravan park complete with roller-discos and cheesy night-time entertainment – or were dragged around the UK in one throughout your childhood – we’re pretty certain you’ll never look at a motorhome in quite the same way again.

A Sun-Soaked Water Park

Water parks are like paradise for children. A few slides, waterfalls and the odd inflatable and a kid can be kept occupied for hour upon hour of fun. For most of us, ‘aqua parks’ were the highlight of our Spanish week abroad – smothered head to toe in sun cream, being let loose in one of these meant some opportune time for a bit of parental relaxation; why is it no matter how much you begged your mum, she never went on anything?!

The British Seaside

Forget the Costa del Sol… for a lot of people, the south coast of England was the most glamorous things ever got. You might very well turn your nose up these days, but there’s a lot to be said for deckchairs, a freezing sea, and a 99 with a flake! With so many childhood memories wrapped up in fish and chip paper, the great British seaside will forever be burned in our memories. If you’re thinking of planning a coastal holiday this year: how about Cornwall? We’re actually not kidding…

Disneyworld

If you were lucky enough to visit Disneyworld as a kid, you’ve probably wanted to go back ever since. Like a cartoon come to life, Walt Disney World Resorts (to give them their full name) – in both Paris and Florida – are the stuff true dreams are made of. With endless rides, life-sized Mickey and Minnie, happy people everywhere and the kind of food you’d love to live on forever: there’s a reason it’s still everyone’s dream holiday, regardless of age. Wherever you’re thinking of going this year, just remember that there’s nothing wrong with getting back to basics. Alternatively, if you are travelling with children, why not give them a holiday they’ll remember for years to come?
