Aruba: Fantasy Getaways

Situated to the north of Venezuela in the southern Caribbean Sea, Aruba boasts white sandy beaches and azure-blue warm waters. The island benefits from being just below the hurricane belt and boasts a dry climate with rarely a rainy day. Many of Aruba’s beaches have the accolade of being some of the best in the world, with peaceful, family-friendly waters and safe, sandy shores.

The other side The other side of the island boasts breathtaking views with spectacular cliffs and the rugged shoreline and blowholes below. This wilder area of Aruba is ideal for hiking and exploring. Inland, Aruba plays host to Arikok National Park. Its desert-like landscape showcases dramatic rock and cave formations, incredible cacti and a wealth of wildlife just waiting to be discovered.

Heritage The island’s rich heritage is reflected in its architecture, cuisine and the warm welcome afforded by the local people. Aruba’s first inhabitants were South American Indians who depended on the sea for survival. The island switched hands throughout the centuries between Spanish and Dutch occupation and is now a constituent country of the Netherlands. As a result, Aruba’s inhabitants are culturally diverse laying claim to South American Indian, European and African ancestry. Despite this multi-cultural diversion, Arubans share a strong national identity which is reflected in everything from the country’s cuisine and architecture to its unique celebrations.

Language Aruba’s official languages are Dutch and the locally-named Papiamento, but most Arubans speak a minimum of four languages, including English and Spanish. The highlight in Aruba’s Catholic calendar is the island’s Easter time carnival. Produced by thousands of Arubans, the carnival’s pageantry is spectacular and unites the island’s inhabitants in an elaborate display of parades and parties to rival any sensational show.

Activities With a wealth of available water-sports, from kite-surfing to scuba diving, Aruba has plenty to keep even the most active traveller occupied. The island may be renowned for its world-class beaches but venture a little further inland and there’s ample opportunity to explore unique architecture or areas of outstanding natural beauty. Take a safari-style jeep tour for a breathtaking and exhilarating way to explore the island. For those simply wishing to relax in this island paradise, look no further than the palm-fringed beaches.

The vast array of varied restaurants offering enticing and exotic local dishes ensure you’ll refuel and re-energise in this dream destination. Chat to advisors at The Co-operative Travel and glean guidance for getting the most out of this fantasy island getaway.
