As Valentine’s Day rapidly approaches, the loved up among are probably considering ways of spoiling your other half. Following on from our most romantic destinations in Europe post we decided instead of the same old, regulation chocolate or flowers, why not choose this year to go all out? (It is unlucky number (20)13 remember – a sure fire signal to make the effort!)

Alternatively, if you’re a singleton or simply can’t afford to whisk your beloved away on a holiday for two – it certainly doesn’t do any harm to dream. To put you in the right mood, here’s a selection of some of the most romantic Valentine’s Day holiday destinations in the world.

A Venice Gondola Ride

Renowned for its beauty and architecture, the city of Venice is the perfect setting to enjoy spending time with your loved one. With the added bonus of delicious food and all that Italian passion, it seems a top choice. Although fairly expensive, a gondola ride whilst in Venice has simply got to be done; our advice would be to steer clear of the San Marco area, and instead head towards the backwater canals for a more secluded, less touristy experience.

A Trip to Bath

If you don’t have the money to splash out on flights abroad, why not take time out and visit what is arguably the UK’s most romantic location? The spa city of Bath also happens to be one of the most stunning in England; with Georgian architecture and a great literary heritage (as any Jane Austen fan worth their salt will know) – it’s up there with our most-visited cities. Although a trip to the Roman Baths and Royal Crescent is advised – simply spending time in its pretty gardens and cosmopolitan café’s would provide just as much enjoyment.

A Cottage in the Peak District

The beautiful Peak District is a place still favoured by many in the UK. It has undiscovered beauties and breathtaking views to make it one of the romantic places around. What I found interesting myself was that you can even rent cottages dotted around the peak district. I found this site to book luxury cottages at Cumbrian-Cottages.co.uk which is seems excellent value and is currently offering 20% off for all couples.

A Ski Lodge in Switzerland

Did our recent bout of the white stuff leave you dreaming of log cabins and hot chocolate? Well why not whisk away your other half to a true winter wonderland? The ski season is still in full swing around February time, and with lots of chalet’s offering excellent prices, we’re pretty certain you could find a charming and secluded spot for two. Although there are lots of excellent resorts in Europe, we’d suggest somewhere like Zermatt in Switzerland; combining good skiing as well as a picture-postcard town, it’d provide the perfect amount of fun and romance.

A Weekend in Paris

It’s probably the most clichéd of all locations, but there’s a reason for that! Oozing charm from every street corner; whatever you do in Paris is bound to be a romantic excursion. From a meal for two in any delightful little café or restaurant, to a walk along the champs-elysees, or a stroll hand in hand round any of its magnificent museum’s or galleries – you’re bound to end up gazing adoringly at each other. Just take our advice and resist the temptation to propose under the Eiffel tower – now that’s just bordering on cheesy…
